Adding Outside Organizational Users to an SSO System in Waterly

Background

Waterly is committed to strengthening cybersecurity for organizations of every size. We support Single Sign-On (SSO), enabling users to access Waterly applications with a single set of employer-provided credentials. By leveraging your organization’s existing identity verification—typically managed through your IT department—SSO streamlines the login process and minimizes the need to remember multiple usernames and passwords, while also bolstering security through centralized authentication.

There are times when external users—such as utility representatives, engineers, consultants, or partners—require access to your SSO-enabled Waterly system. Because these users are not part of your organization’s SSO directory, Waterly provides a secure and structured method for collaborating with them, maintaining the integrity of your SSO environment. This article details the workflow for granting external users access to your SSO-enabled Waterly system.

Supervisory Workflow to Add External Users

Submit a Support Ticket

A Supervisor in the Waterly System looking to add an outside user should send a support ticket to Waterly. This is easily accomplished by clicking on the Support button or send an email to support@waterly.com

The ticket should include:

  • The email addresses of the external users who need access.
  • The specific systems they should be allowed to access.

Waterly will then create the necessary infrastructure to allow the new users to be invited to the host SSO systems.

Adding Users to the Target System(s)

The final step is for the non-organizational users to be invited to the host SSO systems. Waterly will notify the initiating host supervisor that the new users have now been authenticated and can be added as users to the desired systems. The host supervisor can then add these users – using the same exact same email address provided earlier – to the live system(s) and assign the appropriate role (commonly Operator or Read Only)

Conclusion

This workflow makes it simple and secure to bring outside partners—like consultants, engineers, or utility reps—into your Waterly system while keeping your SSO environment safe. Every user is verified before they’re given access, so you can collaborate with confidence. And if those outside users also log in with SSO on their end, the security is even stronger—creating a smooth, trusted experience for everyone involved.
